Mobile Website Development: Where can you go wrong here?

Matt Thompson Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Mobile website development is more than just making your site look good in miniature.

You know the drill. You’re driving somewhere and discover you need to do a quick search to find a product or service near your current location. Lucky you, you’ve got a smartphone. You’ve got Google on your side, ready to help you find what you need. You do your search. You get twenty million results to choose from, and pick one at the top of the list.

Click. You land on the site.

Squint. You can’t read a thing on it.

Flick. You try to expand it so you can see what it says.

Argh. You realize that when it’s expanded, you can’t really use the site or navigate it. You’re only able to access pages on the site that are, at that moment, useless to you.

The moral of the story? Give your mobile website development project the respect it deserves – it’s not just a mini-me version of your regular site. Your regular site’s comparable to a massive cruise ship – it’s steady, sturdy, trustworthy, with lots of great stuff on-board for your visitors to love. Your mobile site needs to be more like a jetski – all the credibility and branding of your regular site, but with fantastically fast navigation and usability.

Take a look at your mobile site right now – go ahead, whip out that smartphone and take a look. If you don’t think you could navigate it while driving (and face it, people do that), contact us right now for a proposal so you can get business on the go.

Google stats you need to know about mobile web design

Tap, tap, tap. Got a website? Great! Is your site mobile? If not, you’re missing out on a lot of traffic. Recent statistics from Google show enormous growth in the number of searches conducted from mobile devices.

In 2011 a study called "The Mobile Movement" found that:

  1. More than 77% of search engine searches are done on mobile devices. This means your customers are trying to find you while they’re on the go and ready to buy.
  2. 9 out of 10 searches conducted from a smartphone result in action from the consumer.
  3. Over 95% of smartphone users use their phone to find information about local dining and shopping in their local area, and 88% of these users take action in less than one day.

Having a mobile-friendly website means mobile users will be able to see your marketing message and ultimately take action. Don’t just assume your website works well in mobile format. Getting your site to work on mobiles means more than just having it show up.

It seems like just yesterday that people were using beepers and carrying around mobile phones that couldn’t fit in a pocket.  Fast forward to 2012 and there are a plethora of applications and uses for smart-phones both for individuals and businesses alike.

When 83% of adults own cell phones and 35% of those are smart phones, you can’t afford to ignore mobile marketing.  So what ways can you capitalize on these new mobile marketing trends in order to reach your local customers?

Mobile Websites

Having an online presence is a necessity for all businesses in the 21st century, but is that enough?  For an effective marketing strategy, your business needs to have a presence wherever your target market can be found, and that includes mobile.  Mobile websites are easier to read on smart phones than traditional websites and can include targeted information that mobile users are looking for like your contact information, specials and promotions, and a list of your products/services.

Mobile Search and Organic Traffic

When potential customers search on mobile phones, they are much more likely to be searching for local businesses and events than on a desktop.  Over 40% of mobile searches are local versus 20% on desktop computers.  If your target market is segmented by location, then you need a mobile search optimization strategy in place so that your customers find you and not a competitor.

Mobile Advertising

Online advertising has been around since the beginning of the internet, but was changed forever with the introduction of search advertising products like Google’s AdWords and Microsoft’s AdCenter.  Mobile advertising is a growing industry that has reached over $2.5 billion a year and continues to rise as smart phones become more accessible and affordable to all.

Mobile Applications

For some businesses, creating a mobile application for the Android, Blackberry, or Apple markets could contribute to your overall branding and marketing strategy.  For example, Moes has a great application for smart-phones that allows you to place orders ahead of time and pick them up with ease.

With hard economic times and many Americans still struggling through a recession, companies have had to get creative with their marketing to convince consumers to buy their products or services. Consumers simply are not spending their money freely. When they do spend their money, they are shopping smart and looking for the best deals. Mobile marketing and proximity marketing have become the newest tools in the tool chests of many companies. Competition is fierce, and many companies are beginning to try these new marketing techniques.

With such an increase in mobile devices, mobile marketing is an outstanding way to reach customers. Just about everybody has a mobile phone or mobile device they carry with them everywhere they go. Mobile marketing allows companies to reach their market wherever they are. The most popular form of mobile marketing is using SMS text messaging. Customers can opt in to receive daily specials from local restaurants or coupons to their favorite stores.

As lunchtime approaches, people are trying to figure out where to eat, and they receive a coupon special for ten percent off to a local restaurant sent right to their phones. Chances are pretty good that they will now consider this restaurant for lunch. This is a great example of the power of mobile marketing.

Proximity marketing delivers marketing messages to people located in a specific location at a specific time offering a coupon for savings, or an advertisement. An example of proximity marketing would be to send an SMS text coupon for a free beer at a local restaurant with the purchase of an appetizer to everyone with a mobile device that is in attendance at the sporting event down the street. By using their location, and the time the event lets out, chances are far grater that the consumer will stop in for that free beer. After all, it is right down the street.

Another great example would be to send out a ten percent coupon to everyone who is currently in the plaza where your store is located. This is a very powerful marketing tool.

By utilizing mobile marketing and proximity marketing companies have the opportunity to market to the people in their location at the specific time they may be looking for their service or product. The advertisements can come in several ways. SMS text, video or picture ads which are transmitted and the consumer is asked if they would like to receive the advertisement. Once the advertisement is received, the consumer simply takes their phone to the establishment and presents the coupon to receive the special.

There are so many creative ways to use mobile marketing and proximity marketing to advertise and market any business or service. Proximity marketing and mobile marketing allow companies to specifically target consumers who are close by their place of business. They are quickly becoming very powerful and popular marketing tools. There is a very big potential for mobile marketing and proximity marketing.  Contact us today for a free marketing proposal on how we can help improve your bottom line.
